“What’s Up Downtown” at the Jefferson Soil & Water Conservation District Office

March 28, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The first “WHAT’S UP DOWNTOWN” event for 2018, sponsored by The Steubenville Revitalization Group (SRG) will be at the Jefferson Soil & Water Conservation District office located inside the Ohio Valley Tower Building . They are located on the Mezzanine level.

The purpose of this event is to highlight the JSWCD efforts to help save and preserve the EASTERN HELLBENDER, an endangered species in the State of Ohio, from being extirpated from the state. This endangered species is a vital entity in the biodiversity of the watersheds of the Ohio and is an indicator of a healthy ecosystem. The EASTERN HELLBENDER has a long and rooted history with Jefferson County and was once presumed lost in Ohio before being found in the Yellow Creek in northern Jefferson County. The EASTERN HELLBENDER has since been found in both Yellow Creek and Cross Creek in Jefferson County and these populations are playing a vital role in reintroducing the species back to its native ranges in Ohio. The JSWCD has recently received a baby EASTERN HELLBENDER that was raised from an egg collected in Cross Creek, and has this year old salamander on display at their offices and the public can see up close and personal this endangered species that has always called Jefferson County home.
