MLK Youth and Children’s Celebration/Community Service Day

A successful master chef in Columbus, Steubenville native Janese Y Boston is the keynote speaker for the MLK Youth and Children's Celebration/Community Service Day on Jan. 16. Boston, who grew up in Steubenville's South End, will be cooking a meal for the students at the Sycamore Youth Center and will be joined by special guests JaQuan Lavender of the JaQuan Lavender Foundation: The Journey to Gold and Steve Forte of the Sycamore Corps Mentoring Program, who will be sharing brief presentations on their mentoring programs, according to Bobbyjon Bauman, center director. Entertainment will be provided by Valley's Got Talent overall winners Elisha Fletcher, 2014, and Lynzee Ensell, 2021, as well as CBE 180, hip hop; Gene Mot Shelby "Minister of Truth", hip hop; J.R. Lawrence Lewis, Hip Hop; and Jasmine Wooden, mime. Community service projects will be done at Urban Mission Ministries, the Sycamore Youth Center and Hilltop Children's House. Although the event is geared for kindergarten through 12th-grade students, everyone is welcome to attend. The event, which is free of charge with no reservations necessary, is sponsored by the MLK Association, led by Jim Baber, president, and the Sycamore Youth Center. The program schedule includes: – 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.: Youth performers (rappers, dancers and mimes; – 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.: Presentation by Boston; – 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Catered lunch by Boston and MLK birthday cake and presentations by Forte and Lavender; and – 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.: Service projects. Heart Healthy Hike – Purple & Red Trails – Beatty Park

February is Heart Healthy month celebrate with a Winter Hike. Meet at the Old Stone Lodge/Purple "Trailhead Sign," where the stone wall at the old Caretakers House is located (on the left, first parking lot before the 1st stone bridge), will begin promptly at 10 a.m. This is a Level Two Hike to the Old Stone Lodge. If you complete the entire hike, it will be a little over 3 miles, with portions of the hike uphill on the way. Bring bottled water and/or a backpack with a warm drink, snacks, hand warmers. hat, etc. At the stone lodge, anyone can stop and sit by the fire OR you can continue with some of us to the McCook/Red trail and loop to the cemetery and back to the old stone lodge where we can all warm up by the fire. You can bring/carry a small fold up chair (or sit on a log) by the fire. We will hike back down to our cars. Anyone attending can do part or all of the hike and leave and complete the hike at their own pace or schedule. This event could be cancelled due to bitter cold or ice. If there is snow and winter temps, the hike will take place, after all, it is a winter hike.
