Civil War Tour of Steubenville’s Historic Union Cemetery

Historic Fort Steuben and the Steubenville Visitor Center will host a tour of the Civil War section of Steubenville’s Historic Union Cemetery led by Jeff Evans, on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 6pm.  The tour will focus on the critical months of May, June and July of 1863.

“During those months, the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Vicksburg were fought, engaging hundreds of Upper Ohio Valley men in the conflicts,” explained Evans.  “The War impacted the Upper Ohio Valley also at that time with the infamous Confederate Morgan’s Raiders that were the area in the summer of 1863.”

The tour will focus on the men and women from the Upper Ohio Valley who shaped and were impacted by the battles and the war, some of whom are interred at Union Cemetery.  Evans, an educator, speaker and native of Wintersville, has been interested in Civil War history for many years, previously working as a National Park Ranger with the Gettysburg National Battlefield Park.

Participants will meet at the Jefferson County Civil War Memorial in Union Cemetery located at 1720 Sunset Blvd. at 6pm.  A suggested donation of $5 per person will be asked.  For more information and a map of the cemetery, contact Historic Fort Steuben, 740-283-1787 or info@oldfortsteuben.com.
