Civil War Tour of Steubenville’s Historic Union Cemetery

Historic Fort Steuben and the Steubenville Visitor Center will host a tour of the Civil War section of Steubenville’s Historic Union Cemetery led by Jeff Evans, on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 6pm.  The tour will focus on the critical months of May, June and July of 1863.

“During those months, the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Vicksburg were fought, engaging hundreds of Upper Ohio Valley men in the conflicts,” explained Evans.  “The War impacted the Upper Ohio Valley also at that time with the infamous Confederate Morgan’s Raiders that were the area in the summer of 1863.”

The tour will focus on the men and women from the Upper Ohio Valley who shaped and were impacted by the battles and the war, some of whom are interred at Union Cemetery.  Evans, an educator, speaker and native of Wintersville, has been interested in Civil War history for many years, previously working as a National Park Ranger with the Gettysburg National Battlefield Park.

Participants will meet at the Jefferson County Civil War Memorial in Union Cemetery located at 1720 Sunset Blvd. at 6pm.  A suggested donation of $5 per person will be asked.  For more information and a map of the cemetery, contact Historic Fort Steuben, 740-283-1787 or info@oldfortsteuben.com.

It’s Farmers’ Market Time!

One of our favorite things about this time of year is the anticipation of nutritious fresh fruit and veggies being available locally for all to enjoy!  It is still a little early for some of our favorites like corn and tomatoes but there is lettuce, spinach, onions, radishes and the like available now.

Today is the opening day of the Farmers’ Gateway Market.  The market is located in the side parking lot of Eastern Gateway Community College.   Some of the vendors expected on this first day are West Wind Farm, Foster Fluharty Farms, Kinsey’s Spring Valley Farm, Spring Valley Stock Farms and Fowler Hill Farm.  The market opens at 4:30pm and closes at 6:30pm

For more information, or to obtain a vendor packet, please contact the Jefferson Soil & Water Conservation District at (740)264-9790 or visit www.jeffersonswcd.org and/or

Then in just 2 weeks the Downtown Steubenville Farmers’ Market will open for the season. The Downtown Market is located at the corner of South Fourth and South Streets and the hours are 8:00am until 1:00pm.   The first day of the market is Thursday, June 20th and it will be open every Thursday through October 31st (weather permitting).

Favorite vendors who have been selling at this market for years, actually decades, are coming, including Angiuli Farms, Russells Produce and Woolf Farms, also signed up to come back is RnR Farms and Lynn’s Goodies & Gifts.    There are several first time vendors signed up as well, including more baked goods.

In addition, this year the Jefferson County Board of Health is planning to be on site doing vitals and giving out information.  Family Recovery Center is also coming with information and handouts.
