‘Hellbender’ at Schiappa Branch of Public Library of Steubenville & Jefferson County

April 14, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Have you ever seen a Hellbender or know what one is?  Most likely not because Hellbenders live under a rock in water and are considered an endangered animal in Ohio.

Jefferson County is home to the largest population of known Hellbenders in Ohio.  They are the oldest living animal found in Jefferson County with fossils of them discovered more than 160 million years ago.  The Hellbender was last surveyed in Jefferson County in 1937 until recently.  Now, Jefferson County Soil & Water Conservation District is playing a vital role with the State of Ohio to save them.

Stop in the library to see one and learn how this type of salamander is benefiting Jefferson County.
